Grading

Grading in this course will be on the basis of my judgment of the quality of your assigned writing. Here's how percentages will be allocated:

10% Summary 2
10% Preliminary bibliography
15% Annotated bibliography
5% Citation quiz
25% Research synthesis, final draft
10% Oral presentation of research
25% Final draft of research argument
All of the above assignments are intended to build your research and writing skills, and they are arranged in sequence. You may not hand in any assignment in this course until you have submitted all of those which precede it.

Attendance

Writers improve their work as a result of practice, instruction, and interaction with readers. The assignments in this course will give you practice. The activities in class will give you instruction and interaction with readers. It is in your best interests as a writer that you come to class regularly.

Absences from class will impede your growth as a writer, and they will also affect your grade. I assume that illness and family emergencies will sometimes interfere with students' ability to attend class regularly. Excessive absences, however, can result in significant reductions in your final course grade.

If you are a member of an SU organization that will take you away from class, you must notify me of that at the beginning of the semester so that we can make appropriate accommodations.
