~ Second writing assignment ~

Write a 3- to 5-page response to the Adams, Queen, Lunsford, or Kristeva text.

Suggestions:

  1. Use the heuristics on the August 31 Powerpoint (in the Documents folder on the Blackboard site) to generate ideas and find an approach. What you're looking for is a way in--something that you want to explore and talk about, and something that will sustain an essay. What you're wanting to avoid is a collection of loosely joined observations about the text you've chosen.
  2. As you make claims about the text, you'll need to reference the relative passages, even if you're not quoting from the text. Paraphrase has to be referenced, too.
Length: 3-5 pages.

Manuscript preparation: Follow the specifications here.

Due date: The final draft is due in hard copy in class on September 28. You'll have a meeting with me during the week of September 18 to talk about your ideas for the paper or to go over a draft.

Grading: As I read your paper, I'll be looking for a thesis-driven essay. If I'm convinced that the writer cares about what s/he's saying, I'll feel that I should care to read it. I always appreciate arguments that take multiple points of view into account--arguments that offer evidence for and consider counterevidence to the thesis. Editing matters; so does the manuscript presentation. If you do the assignment as requested and hand it in on time, you'll get a "C." If you do it well, you'll get a "B." If you do it exceptionally well, you'll get an "A." This paper counts as 15% of your final course grade.
