2-3 page proposal for your Unit 4 paper. Explain each of the following in detail:
  1. What do you want to write about in your Unit 4 paper?
  2. Why?
  3. How will this paper expand on your previous work in this class; on a classmates' work; or on one or more assigned readings for the course? If you are departing from all three of these, explain why.
  4. What do you already know about this topic?
  5. What do you need to investigate as you work on this paper?
  6. What sources do you expect to draw upon in your paper?

This will be a graded assignment, and late submissions will be penalized.

Send your proposal to me via email, either as an attachment or as the email itself.
If you are meeting with me on Monday, November 21, then you will need to submit this assignment on Sunday, November 20.

  1. On the main Blackboard page for our course, click on "Communication."
  2. Then choose "Group Pages."

  4. Then "File exchange."
  5. Then "Add file." Be sure that the file you're adding has your name in the file name and on the first page of the document. Also be sure to submit just ONE draft; otherwise, you'll confuse and aggravate your classmates.

  1. Study sects. 5a-5e (pp. 112--150) of Howard Ch. 5. The chapter is in three PDFs in the Blackboard Documents folder.
  2. Do one or more of the following exercises, and send it as an email before class: Exercise 5-2, 5-3, and/or 5-6.

  1. A copy of Howard Ch. 5, sections a-e
  2. A copy of whatever exercises you did in Ch. 5

1 December

Prepare for class (1)

  • Go to the Blackboard course site to get copies of Aleks', Alison's, Alissa's, Amanda's, Amy's, Binny's, Christine K.'s, and Charlie's papers, which will be available by 6:00 p.m. on November 28. At our Blackboard course site, click on "Communication"; then "Group Pages"; then "Unit 4 paper Exchange"; then "File Exchange." You should then be able to download files just as you do from the Documents folder.
  • Everybody is responsible for reading, thinking about, and being prepared to discuss all these drafts. Most important, think about how you react to the drafts. How much did you enjoy reading each one? What interested you? Confused you? Bored you? Angered you? Most of all, writers need to know how real readers respond to their words.
  • Prepare for class (2)

    The following people will write responses to and analyses of drafts. Email your responses-&-analyses to me and to the author before class. (You can do this on Blackboard, if you wish. Click "Communication"; then "Send email"; then "Select Users.") Whether you send your response by regular email or from Blackboard, provide the necessary explanation on the "Subject" line, e.g., "Alison's response to Mileidy." This will be a graded exercise.
