Assignment, Paper #1

Answer one of the following questions. These are revisions of the questions you generated in class on September 9:
  1. How should plagiarism be defined?
  2. What is the difference between plagiarism and cheating? Should plagiarism be considered a subset of the larger category of cheating?
  3. Why do people do (or not do) it? How (or why) is the decision to plagiarize made? What factors are involved?
  • Your answer to the question you choose should be offered in the form of an argument, as you develop and explain your own beliefs on the question you have chosen.

  • Length of paper: 1500 words, excluding source citations. (In most fonts, this will mean approximately 6 pages.)

  • Design specifications: Follow guidelines in Howard, Writing Matters, Chapter 7, "Formatting," sections 7b, 7c, 7d, and 7g (sent to you in PDF).

  • Getting extra help while writing the paper: see suggestions on the course syllabus.

  • Grading the paper: I'll take the following into account:
    1. How insightful, fair, and persuasive the argument is;
    2. How accessible the style and editing are;
    3. Whether the final draft is formatted according to specifications in Howard, Chapter 7;
    4. How well-developed your preliminary written work (due on 9/16, 9/21, and 9/23) is, and whether you prepared it on schedule.
  • Due date: Monday, September 27, 4:30 p.m.

  • Submission procedures:
    1. Hand in a print copy at 239 HB Crouse Hall (the main office of the Writing Program). The print copy should be accompanied by your preliminary work. Clip these all together, with the final draft on top and the earliest work on the bottom. Put it in the drop box provided there; a secretary can direct you to it. Sign the clipboard beside the box.
    2. Also send me an electronic copy of the final draft: attach your file to an email.
