Assignment #4

Critical Reading: Summary Essay

In 300 to 500 words, summarize Scholle, David. "What Is Information? The Flow of Bits and the Control of Chaos." Democracy and New Media. Ed. Henry Jenkins and David Thorburn. Cambridge, MA: MIT P, 2003. 343-365.

Design specifications:

  1. Follow guidelines in Howard, Writing Matters, Chapter 7, "Formatting," sections 7b, 7c, 7d, and 7g (sent to you in PDF).
  2. Use automatic formatting (rather than tabs) to set paragraph indentations: in Microsoft Word, go to the Format/Paragraph menu.

Getting extra help while writing the paper: see suggestions on the course syllabus.

Timetable:

  • First draft due 11/2
  • Reader's summary due 11/9. Send me an electronic copy of your reader's summary by 6:00 p.m. on November 8; bring 3 hardcopies to class on November 9.
  • Final draft of summary essay due 11/11
  • Submission procedures:
    1. Send me an electronic copy of the final draft: attach your file to an email.
    2. Hand in a print copy in class on 11/11. The print copy should be accompanied by your preliminary work: the first draft that you prepared for 11/2; the reader's summary; and any preliminary drafts of the final essay. Clip these all together, with the final draft on top and the earliest work on the bottom.
    Grading the paper: I'll take the following into account:
    1. How accurately you represent Scholle's essay;
    2. How comprehensively you represent Scholle's essay;
    3. How comprehensible your summary is;
    4. Whether the final draft is formatted according to specifications in Howard, Chapter 7;
    5. How well-developed your preliminary written work (due on 11/2 and 11/9) is, and whether you prepared it on schedule.
