Unit 2: Researching Intellectual Property

In Unit 2, we will focus on survey methods of research and critical assessment of online and library sources, and you will learn the APA citation system. The unit will include summary essays, an analytical report (5-7 pages), and a researched argument (12-18 pages).

Preparation
  1. Read "Code of Student Conduct," Critical Convergences 411-412.
  2. Read Howard, "Forget about Policing Plagiarism; Just Teach," Critical Convergences 35-36.
  3. Read Kantz, "Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively," Critical Convergences 37-50.
  4. Write a 300-500-word summary essay of Kantz.

--no class; this is group meeting time. The week of March 18 is for conducting your research; your 5- to 7-page analytical report is due March 27. March 25

Preparation
  1. Write a 300 to 500-word summary of an intellectually substantive library source for your research topic. I'll grade the paper not only on the quality of the summary but also on the quality of the source you choose to summarize.
  2. Continue research for the analytical report that is due 3/27.
Bring to class
  1. Your summary + a printed copy or photocopy of the source you are summarizing.
  2. Longman Companion
  3. Notes/drafts of your analytical report.

  1. Hand in your summary + a printed copy or photocopy of the source.
  2. Discuss research projects.

March 27

Preparation
  1. Final draft, analytical report (5-7 pages) on your research topic. Hand in copies of your sources with the paper. Clamp or rubber-band them together, or put them in a folder.
