In this unit, you will draw on peer-reviewed sources to develop your own argument about one issue that is being taken up by one or more of the Presidential candidates this year--or an issue that you believe they should be taking up.
An important note: Your fourth paper (which is due on May 6) will be an argument on a campaign issue. To complete this assignment successfully, you must do the assigned preliminary work, on schedule. Parts of this preliminary work are due at almost every class meeting for Unit 4. For each of these preliminary assignments that are not handed in on schedule and thoroughly prepared, your grade for the fourth paper will be lowered by one-third of a letter grade--from a "B-" to a "C+," for example. Talk to me about any problems this might raise for you. What issue do you want to argue about, and why? How are the candidates addressing (or avoiding) this issue? What can you learn from experts on the topic? What do you consider to be the plausible or stances that a well-informed, reasonable person might take on this issue? What position do you take, and why? Who would benefit if everyone agreed with you? How would they benefit? Who would suffer, and how?
