Individual responsibilities
This is a big class. That means we must all always have our work done on schedule; arrive at class on time and prepared; and stay on task in class discussion. This may be hardest for me; it's not my usual style. But it is simply necessary. I promise to follow these guidelines religiously, and I require that you do the same. If you don't, your final grade for the course will suffer.

Already I have a caveat to this one: Carolyn points out that her job sometimes prevents her from arriving on time. So everybody, if you teach a class just before this one or have some other ongoing issue that may sometimes make you late for class, please let me know before the course begins, and please come into class vewwy, vewwy quietly.

I'll try to make the minimum of noise.

And to help our late-arriving colleagues, the rest of us should be sure to leave them a chair/place at the table so we aren't all shuffling stuff to let someone sit down.

An excellent idea. Moreover, things will move more smoothly if the first people in the room each morning would set up the tables to maximize seating space, and also forage for extra chairs if needed. People sitting on the couch are going to feel left out and fall asleep. . . .
