Reflection on my own summarizing process
It took me quite awhile to do the summary of the introduction to Tropics of Discourse. First I read the chapter (which is a conceptual beast) and took notes. My reading notes on the introduction, as it turned out, came to 947 words—almost twice the 500-word max for summaries. I also had a lot of quotations for my own reference. So to turn my reading notes into a summary, I had to ditch the quotations; condense the bulk; and rassle with my notes till they were reasonably coherent as a text, freestanding.
One thing you probably won't want to model: I like to go the whole hog when it comes to page references for quotation, summary, and paraphrase. In previous CCR classes, my students have found that excessive and have applied a lighter touch to page referencing. For me, extreme page referencing is useful, because a summary serves to direct the reader to the text for additional information. But you should make your own decisions about that as you summarize chapters.
Questions, suggestions?
