Snow days

It's taken me 6 years at SU to figure out how to manage my long winter commute from the boondocks. My solution is to go online for spring semester (and I have Chris to thank; she egged me on!). I plan to meet my classes face-to-face as much as possible. And on those days when the roads are just b-a-d, we will meet online, on the blog. I'm reserving clusters for as many days as possible through the first half of the semester. If we have a snow day when the cluster isn't available to our class, you'll be responsible for finding a computer somewhere on the planet so that you can participate in our online meeting.

Hence our first meeting, on January 20, will be substantially dedicated to your becoming comfortable with working on the class blog: posting, commenting, and uploading files.

Because of my brilliant snow-day policy, you are required to distribute text to the class via the blog. This will include your summaries and also your work-in-progress on your projects.

I'm glad to take credit for the online idea, and yes, the snow days policy is brilliant. But I don't see the relationship between the snowy day and the reservation for the computer cluster. If the roads are b-a-d, wouldn't we all stay home and log in remotely? And if so, why would we then need a cluster?

Just wondering.....

Finally! I've started taking out some of the gratuitous internal links in these entries, and it appears to be making the site work more reliably. So now I can answer this question: there may well be days when nobody can get to school, but most winters there are also days where local folks can get there with minimal hassles, whereas the long commuters have real problems. It's for those latter days that I've reserved the clusters. Of course, the question before the house right now is, will we have *any* snowy days at all?!

And behold, now he is George the Good, having reserved 009 for us through the winter weeks.
