Gonging and blogging
Participants in this course (including me) will have no opportunities to talk in class about impromptu connections they're making between course materials and other things they've read and thought about, unless those connections are clearly accessible to and valuable to the rest of the class. You will, I assure you, have plenty of opportunity for talking about your course project. But in class, I'll have to cut off all (1) intellectual spins; (2) long speeches on any topic; and (3) two-person arguments. I will, however, urge participants to put these thoughts, speeches, and arguments on the blog. They're essential to your intellectual growth; they're potentially valuable to your classmates; and fortunately, even though we won't have in-class time for them, we'll have this blogspace for tangents, speeches, and arguments. So please take as little personal offense as possible when I gong you in class and point you to the blog. And please do the same favor for me if I take off on one of my rants.
UPDATE: Those who do not observe this law will be sent to time out in the class crate.

Does this work against or with your New Year's resolution? Is that off topic? Am I being gonged already? Shocking! :-P

This is no resolution; it's a law!
