Painter
In class this morning I proposed that we add a book to our syllabus:
Painter, Nell Irvin. Standing at Armageddon: The United States, 1877-1919. New York: W.W. Norton, 1987.
This book would provide us with the social context in which composition arose—a context that has not yet been written into the histories of composition. Please go ahead and purchase it now.
Over the next few days I'll noodle with the syllabus to work this book in without its being a straight-up add-on to the reading list. Right now I'm thinking that as-yet-undetermined chapters from Certeau; Connors Ch. 7; Strickland; Bloom; and Yancey will be casualties. Hence Painter will be something of an add-on, but not a heinous one. Please do share any thoughts you have about this.
