CCR 607: Ground rules & thanks

CCR 607, Fall 2004, Syracuse University, is a wonderfully patient group of people, willing to take part in this band-aid method of meeting without my having to come to campus because I'm still recovering from a near-fatal and widely-publicized bout of Killer Bronchitis. Next semester I'll have a blog set up for CCR 611, one that everybody in the class can post to and not just comment on! Today, however, I'll set up threads for discussion, and we can "talk" by commenting on those threads.

So much for the thanks. Now for ground rules:

First, let's stick with the real-life class boundaries; i.e., resist the urge to run all over the building or take a break to get the laundry out of the dryer or carry on a side conversation with someone else who happens to be in the room or check your email and respond to one of your students' frantic queries. You are, however, Hereby Authorized to wear your jammies or iPod.

Second, I'd like to focus the first half of the class period on the diversity discussion, and then move to the other discussions in the second half of class. As a confirmed multitasker (aka ADD), though, I don't want to forbid people from jumping around from discussion to discussion; rather, I just want us to stay focused on the diversity discussion in the first half.

Third, you all should decide when we're breaking. Just send me (and anyone else who's not with the group) an email saying "break now!" And we'll take 10 minutes from that point. (Note to anyone who's not with the group: set your email to check for messages every minute.)

Fourth, if anything goes tragically awry, call me. You've got my home number.

Finally, others who chance upon these discussions and are interested in them are very welcome to join in.

Anything else?

Okay! I'm here, coffee in hand. I trust Ty has brought coffee to Tyra and Aleshia, and that Vanessa and Ina have provided food for Jeremiah. Let the games begin--

Hi! I need to begin from home and then when we break, I'll run to campus (only takes me 10 minutes). My only concern is that my computer is running very slow--I just had the cable connection worked on and part of it runs outside the house... I was told that it was good until -23degrees, so I guess that means that it completely stops. This slowness, however, was not expected.

OK, so how does this work? We check our e-mail for responses?

::applause::

j & e & me are here--don't know 'bout v & a's plans, but ty DID bring a's coffee--it's here w/o her!

Yeah, okay...Jeremiah here. Reporting live from the basement of HBC. Figuring things out...

Nope, you won't get email responses, because I'm listed as the only author of this blog. You'll just have to keep hitting the refresh button on your browser.

I think Aleshia is going to join you in HBC; Ty's coffee was just too alluring.

prof, morning!

Posted by: ina at November 23, 2004 10:12 AM

what next?

Posted by: JT at November 23, 2004 10:12 AM

Next, go to the diversity thread. Welcome, Ina!

Posted by: senioritis at November 23, 2004 10:13 AM

Ah, okay, it did work.

Okay, tech question: Do we have to always enter our e-mail and click "Remember Me"?

Posted by: JT at November 23, 2004 10:14 AM

I think (hope) that once you've clicked "Remember me," it will, and then you won't have to keep entering your info.

Many thanks to Collin, who (we're hoping) has just remedied the spam message problem that Electric Slide was encountering. Thanks, C!

Welcome, Aleshia!

As you come back from break, feel free to continue in this thread, and I'd really like to hear about people's thoughts for their *own* future pedagogy re diversity. But let's get started on the other threads, too. I know I kind of set this up sequentially, but we've really extended the diversity discussion (which is great!), so here's my revision:
(See? Even when we're online, I can't stick w/ my syllabus!)
Let's do these things simultaneously:
• Vanessa, make an entry in the technology thread;
• Tyra, make an entry in the genre thread;
• Anybody who has done a WC consultation, make an entry in that thread;
• Everybody else, make an entry in whatever thread you wish.
And THEN everybody can just jump from one conversation to another at will.

Posted by: senioritis at November 23, 2004 11:58 AM

OMG, you all, we're approaching the end of our allotted time. Class dismissed, and thank you for playing. Whatever the aggravations you've experienced with the genre, from my perspective this has been a great success. In fact, here on my blog I'll start a thread that reflects on my experience today, and I hope you all will post to it, if you're interested.
And you can stay today and keep "talking" as much as you wish, of course!
And because these threads will stay online, you can return to them and continue to post to them. That would be extremely interesting, I think. Because I'm sure we'll all have more to say after today's conversations, and after some cogitation may want to make more entries. Eventually today's threads will drop into the blog archives, but you can return to them easily, by clicking today's date in the calendar that's on the main page of this blog.
Thanks for a great morning!
Becky
