Finals that matter

  1. Colgate v. Holy Cross, March 9, for the Patriot League championship. Colgate was last year's conference winner, playing Tennessee in the first round of the NCAAs. This year Holy Cross went into the season ranked #1, Colgate #2. And verily, they play each other on Wednesday. Holy Cross has a much better record. But Colgate has beaten them once this season and could do it again on Wednesday. Complication: the game is on HC's home court, and when Colgate played them there, the home cooking was remarkable, with Holy Cross taking 33 foul shots (as compared to Colgate's 7). It's my hope that the HC war chest is exhausted and the refs will be working only for their regular wages on Wednesday.
  2. Tennessee vs. LSU, in just a few minutes, for the SEC championship. Sure, both of these teams are going to be #1 seeds in the Big Tournament, but tonight's conference championship should be something to behold. 9:00 p.m. update: Tennessee 67, LSU 65. And Tennessee's heroic freshman Hornbuckle is from Charleston WV.
