The snowshoe report
So the winter whose absence I was lamenting simply arrived late this year; but arrive it did. It's been snow, snow, and more snow in E'ville since mid-January. I posted this entry just the day before the accident. We've had very few actual storms, though—last night's nor'easter being one of the exceptions. With a good 16" base today, it was snowshoes instead of skis. I step out my back door, strap on the snowshoes, and take off across our pastures and down to the swamp, which is nicely frozen and safe for traversing at this time of year. The groundhog and skunk trails that I've seen while skiing the past couple of days aren't fresh; those little critters have dug back into their burrows till this stuff subsides. No deer trails, either, come to think of it. Just me, the cardinals and crows, and a world of white and brown.
Aesthetics aside, snowshoeing at this depth is great quad work, getting me ready for the cycling season. Which will come—at about the same time as Tyra's snowdrops. And it's a beautiful thing to be able to ski and snowshoe again; that's yet another thing I'm grateful for. Four weeks ago, my legs were so weak that I could barely climb the stairs to the second floor of my house. Next week I expect to be back to a regular workload, albeit with a reduced teaching assignment.
Note to self: have to fix the south pasture fence before next winter; a piece of it is buried in snow, which means it's only a matter of time before the snowmobilers are tearing around the property, destroying all the small vegetation.
