Well, in my case there would also be "Pills" by Bo Diddley, in honor of my five days on morphine and two weeks on Darvocet.

"Radar Gun," Bottle Rockets
"Until I Gain Control Again," Emmylou Harris
"Convoy," C. W. McCall
"Twin Cadillac Valentine," Screaming Blue Messiahs
"Lost Highway," Hank (Senior)
"White Line," The Seldom Scene (or else their bluegrass cover of the Dead's "Rider")

Oh, I could do this all day -- what a fine idea. (I still hold my Class A Commercial Driver's License -- y'know, just in case this whole rhet/comp thing doesn't work out.)

Which is to say: I hope your hypothetical's not standing in for an actuality, and everything's OK.

Hey Mike,
You got a number for a truck driving school? I may need that. :)

But, not to sidetrack the post -- How about something by The Cars?

Posted by: Marcia at April 4, 2005 10:43 PM

Yes, and there's another that I didn't have on iTunes: John Prine's "The Accident."

But yeah, I'm fine. And I should reassure anyone who gets alarmed by the tenor of a couple of those titles: I was not wasted when I wrecked. Not "wasted" in the sense of "chemically altered," anyhow. Just dog tired after a long day and a long drive.

And dang, Mike, you and Marcia are compelling me to make a new CD! I don't have all the songs you name, but I do have some of them. Anything by the Cars is always good under all circumstances. And Seldom Scene? I've got LPs from those guys from the 70s. Gotta get Beloved Partner to burn 'em to CD. Saw the Seldom Scene in person at the Galax VA bluegrass festival in 1976. They were hot—musically and otherwise. I just checked for a website for them, and I'm hanged if they aren't still playing, though they're no longer hot in the "otherwise" sense; I see John Duffey has died (didn't know that and am sorry indeed to learn it; he had a kind spirit and was a great musician); and I see John Grey has departed the band (and he was the Otherwise Hottest).

Krista: five days on morphine and two weeks on Darvocet. That's a long time without the use of your brain. More than anything else you've said, that fact gives me some comprehension of your pain. Holy sheet, mon. Just endure.

Oh! Oh! And I didn't get myself arrested, but I did get myself a ticket. When your vehicle spins out of control on an icy New York highway, the New York State Police are compelled by law to give you a ticket for crossing the center line. They will apologize as they do so, but they will do it all the same, and then you have to pay $113.

In the winter of 96-97, I saw Emmylou Harris play at D.C.'s 9:30 club, and there was a murmur from many in the audience who hadn't heard the news when she noted John Duffey's passing.

Have you heard the band play since? Live or recorded? I need to check out their current stuff. I see Fred Travers has replaced Duffey on the dobro, so that bodes well for ongoing quality.

I haven't heard them since. But their "Live at the Cellar Door" CD seems to never lose its appeal for me.

Our LP is probably very scratched, but BP is a genius at getting good quality CDs out of the old LPs. Can't wait to hear that album again.
