What I did this summer
Suddenly I realize that I don't have a single plan for the summer that I would describe as "cool." That's just disturbing. There are lots of appealing things: rest, gardening, writing, cycling, visiting with family. But not one cool thing. I think I need to hear other people's cool summer plans, so that I can appropriate someone else's.

Mark and I are planning a few local activities, like the finger lakes to go wine tasting, and maybe visiting Salem, Mass. to check out the witches, and perhaps Washington, because Mark is really interested in cobb homes and their construction, and they have quite a few there (i guess?). I think you and your TP would enoy some of those things, espacially Salem since he is a historian.

Well, Salem would be particularly cool because I have an ancestor who died there: Rebecca Nurse. Hanged in 1692. I'm the first woman in our direct line since her to be named Rebecca. I understand her house is still standing and that there's quite a bit of historical stuff there, but I've never visited. So yeah, that's an excellent idea for me to appropriate!

Me? Cool stuff includes driving to Philomath, Oregon for a multi-generational family reunion, with a few stops and a coast tour along the way, and a few stops on the way back, for a total of 3+ weeks and over 6000 miles to scratch the ongoing itch of wanderlust.

I'm taking a summer trip to Oregon, too, but I think I'll fly. My '92 Geo complained a lot the last time it made the cross-country trip. :-)

That sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. Can't appropriate that one; so you'll have to blog the trip so's the rest of us can participate vicariously.

To be honest, a summer where you can rest, garden, write, cycle, and visit with family sounds pretty cool to me... The only trip I have planned involves a horrible 12-hour trans-Pacific flight in July.

Dwight and I are visiting his dad in L.A. While there, we will borrow said dad's red mercedes convertible and drive down the coast to San Diego (where much frolicking on the beach and drinking of beer will take place).
Yeehaw!

I'm part of a listserv on "words" that has an annual ftf, and this year we're the hosts, which means we a) put on a group meal and b) find a lot of interesting local sidetrips for people to take while they're here. Dessert will be "Shortcake at the castle" after a tour of Open Hand Puppet Theatre's puppet and mask museum.
Have you ever been to Sonnenberg Gardens? It's sooo fascinating, with a variety of formal and informal gardens - lots of fun.
