Day Nine

Fred's sitting in the window, about four feet away from me at eye level, reading the morning's news. When I started typing again, he was momentarily suspicious of the keyboard but held his ground. OMG, now he's lying down. 9999ip[[[[[[; (That's commentary from Teakettle; this is a collaborative blog, but she refuses to sign her posts.)

I was realizing yesterday that part of what's so good about Fred (and there are many, many good things about him) is that he represents something that Tom and I chose to do and worked hard for because it would bring us pleasure. We do lots of fun things—buying that truck was a kick, for example. But that truck was a remedy for a wrecked car. Gardening is fun, but it's something that's already an ongoing part of our lives. Fred's presence in this house represents a deliberate exercise of the simple option for joy.
