I had wondered about this, and Cycleicio.us provides answer s: Yes, so people did evacuate via bike. You have to be single and hardy to do it, but it averts gridlock and running out of gas.

Thanks for the link.

I agree, it would be extremely difficult for anyone with any kind of ties (children, pets) to go more than a few miles by bike. I can pull a couple of trailers a couple of hundred miles, but my son and wife would probably poop out way before that.
