Raunch feminism
In last month's Salon Christine Smallwood reviewed Ariel Levy's Female Chauvinist Pigs, describing in excruciating detail the ways in which young women assert their strength and power by enacting sexual aggressiveness, desirability, and availability. Um hm, thought I, as I read one example after another. I've been seeing a lot of that, and yes, it's unnerving, at the very least.
But then yesterday I was killing time by browsing for IM icons and came upon a site with literally thousands of raunch feminist icons for teeny boppers. Here's a page picked, I swear, completely at random. But I clicked on several other pages and got more of the same. Particularly memorable for me is the icon of a woman in doggie position, wearing a pink thong, butt pointed toward the viewer, flexing her butt cheeks. And I'm not just nodding anymore; I'm hurting.
