Measuring by Mars (reprise)
Twenty years ago, Maya was a cute kid playing under the bleachers at Colgate basketball games. Now she's in the diplomatic service, blogging poignantly and eloquently from Baghdad.
Last week Beloved Partner and I were nightly noticing Mars, remarkably red on the eastern horizon, and Venus, especially bright in the west. We didn't realize the astronomical significance of Mars' appearance. Nor did we realize that in observing it we were connecting with Maya in Baghdad and her folks in Seattle. But we were.
