I have an idea: let's all get together and hate, hate, hate a scholar for making offensive, politicized public statements. Let's talk about withdrawing his tenure. Let's excoriate him in the national press. And then let's decide not to get into the messy business of withdrawing tenure; instead, let's see if we can nail him on a plagiarism rap. Let's convene a panel and review his work. And then let's drag out the process for as long as possible, so that the controversy becomes his textual practices, not his politics. Then even if the panel (if it can be held together long enough to reach a decision) decides that there hasn't been misconduct, everyone will nevertheless hate, hate, hate the scholar for being such a generally questionable character.
