Jonah
Both Gore Vidal and I regard "Jonah" as a useful metaphor. But I know something that Gore doesn't: readers who are ::ahem:: slightly younger than us may not recognize the metaphor. (See comments.) 'Tis a sad, sad day when one's metaphors become superannuated.

This is probably less a matter of youth then of failure to recall our biblical scholarship. Since jonah's story wasn't central to any discussions of chrsitian texts i've had in the last umpteen years, i'd complete forgotten why in fact he had ended up in the belly of that poor whale. On the other hand, i'd be happy to engage in a discussion of hospitality in relation to sodom and gomorrah, and its potential relation to our difficulty in coping with terrorists in the mountains of afghanistan... :)

I'm intrigued!

See, some interpretations of S&G argue that God was punishing them for mistreating guests, not for sexual misconduct per se. That's how important hospitality is in many parts of the Middle East, particularly among those tribes in the mountains of Afghanistan, who may have, at some time in past and/or present, given safe have to bin Laden and company. So, I'm just wondering about possible connections. 'Cause that's how my brain works.

Now, my take on the Jonah reference was that it was a newfangled expression that evey hip person in the country knew, except me, which would make me unhip. Naaaaw.
