Things I Love
- Instant Messenger. I get to chat with my brother off and on throughout the day, even though I'm in New York writing and teaching and he's in West Virginia selling real estate and cutting hair.
- Hoarfrost dancing in the air on a really cold, sunny morning.
- Snowbirds, aka dark-eyed juncos. They're spritely and cheerful as they go about their business, and we only see them in the winter.
- Coffee. Good coffee. Every day.
- Paperwhites. Don't go through an upstate January without 'em.
- Teaching grad students.
- Having a 4WD truck with mongo snow tires.
- Having a washer and dryer in my house. I will never take that for granted.
- Having a partner whom I can love, trust, and rely on and who gets to be more fun with each passing year. I'll never take that for granted, either.
- How much easier it is to do this list than the one of things I hate.

*Love* the juncos. We visited friends in Binghamton last weekend, and MsJ was staring out their back sliding glass doors at the birds we miss: juncos, black-capped chickadees, and cardinals. (Urban birds are pretty much limited to pigeons, European sparrows, and starlings...) Inevitably in Vestal a pair of juncos would nest somewhere near our house, despite the presence of predatory cats (Roopie the Jungle Boy). Once a parent attacked the cord on the electric hedge trimmer as MsJ was tidying up near its home.

Oh, juncos are *so* wonderful! I'm awfully fond of them, and I miss them here in the Big City.
