Another shooter's testimony
Cheney was shooting a 28-gauge shotgun, which has the least propulsive force of shotguns, and its pellets disperse more widely than any other.
BP is a recreational shooter—of inanimate clay pigeons, not animals. He "patterned" his new shotgun, a 20-gauge, two years ago, at 15 yards. He was shooting at a 30x36" target. A few of the pellets did not have enough force to fully penetrate the target . For Cheney to shoot a 28-gauge and put 50 pellets in Wittington, "peppering him pretty good" through a hunting vest and shirt and penetrating to the heart, Cheney would have had to be no more than 10 yards from his victim.
