Friday night (indoor) lights
Where the rhetoricians will be on Friday night: Becky's Mountaineers play Donna's Salukis, and in all likelihood, the winner plays Collin's Hawkeyes on Sunday.
Meanwhile, warming the hearts of Collin, Becky, Derek, Chris, George, and a cast of thousands, the Orange take on the Aggies and hope to escape the spectre of the 5-12 upset.
If good fortune holds, it'll be the Mountaineers (natch) in a rematch with SU the following week. But good fortune would have to get SU past JJ and the awesome McRoberts. Here's hopin'.
It doesn't get any better than this. Until tonight, when the women's brackets are announced.
Still: I do want to object to the #6 seed. It shoulda been five. Five was what Beloved Partner and I were expecting. The #6 seed means that Darling Son was right, and I'm sure to hear about that. It won't be as bad as when DS was finally big enough to beat me at one on one (at which point, of course, I quit playing him). But only because both he and I are disappointed at the #6; he was hoping I was right.

Salukis? The surprize of this mascot name--who would choose an elegant but slender sighthound for a mascot?--made me look it up online. Thereby wasting a good three minutes of my time.
Senioritis, I wish I could quit you!

Yes, I was eyeing that matchup myself. Seems like the Mountaineers are favored, but you can never tell what those Salukis might pull out of the bag.
And just in case anyone was wondering: the region of Southern Illinois is known as "Little Egypt." That's why they have an Egyptian dog as a mascot. Why Little Egypt? Different stories are told to explain that one, though one I've found in my own genealogical research (since one branch of my family tree, oddly enough, extends there) is this: a drought up north sent folks downstate to get grain. Reminded them of the story of the Israelites traveling to Egypt for grain.

I guess I coulda provided a link to what I found when I spent that three minutes looking it up...I *do* like Salukis. They're awfully pretty and smart. And fast. (I thought I'd better add an athletic adjective.)
