PDA + iPod ≠ GTD
So yes, I got the new iPod, and yes, I think it's wunnerful. A diehard gadget junkie, I'm levitating over the idea that it synchs with iCal. So I'm thinking hmm, I really should get my Palm to synch with iCal instead of the Palm desktop software. Then I could have my grocery list on the iPod while I'm in Wegman's. (I use my iPod in places like grocery and discount stores as well as gas stations, as a defense against the garbage oldies relentlessly pumped over their loudspeakers.) So I'd only have one gadget whilst shopping etc., instead of two. Good idea, wot?
But, but. I remember KJ saying a few years ago that once she'd synched with iCal, there was no going back.
Anybody got any experience with this? If you do, speak up fast, cuz I'm busy downloading the software. . . .
10 p.m. update: Step awaaaay from the iCal synch with the Palm. I was partway through the conversion when I realized that it would destroy my project management system. For my Palm to-do list, I have GTD-style primary categories (Call, Email, Writing, Outdoors, Indoors, Errands, Desk, Reading, Office), and then the secondary categories are the project names (Handbook, Sites of Plagiarism, Michigan essay, Garden, etc.). In contrast, iCal supports only one category per to-do item. So in the conversion I would have wound up with lists of people to call or email but no idea why, because the project category would have been lost. Yike! I stepped back from the precipice just in time. And yes, I experienced what KJ described: even if you haven't completed the conversion to Palm-iCal synch, you lose the ability to synch Palm-Palm, and you can't get it back. Solution: reinstall the Palm software. Solves the problem.
