Off to NYC

When I'm finished teaching on Tuesday, I take off for NYC for the rest of the week: a day of working with my editors, followed by the two-day annual meeting of the advisory committee to the MLA International Bibliography. I'm never sorry to go to the city; I just plain like the place, and train travel is a pleasure rather than a trial. (I've learned to choose trains that have business class; the ticket isn't much more expensive than coach, and the seats are much more comfortable and always have electrical outlets.) Plus on Wednesday I get to have dinner with SJ. We'll undoubtedly find something silly to do, as well. (Last time it was buying scarves from every street vendor on 34th Street.) My only concern is that I have to remember to buy dinner before I get on the train, because what they offer in the snack car really should be cause for doing time in a federal joint.

And whenever I'm in the city, I make time for Macy's, where I always find everything I want.

But this year it'll be something new: a cute outfit for a newborn girl. Cally Richardson is expected on December 24, and now that the third trimester is here, I'm intending to exercise no more restraint. Macy's will be my first shopping trip for my granddaughter.

Let the games begin.

Have fun with that last task--I have three nieces and a nephew and have discovered the fun (and expense, alas!) of buying baby clothes.
